Tom was feeling great. The sun glistened on the gorgeous Hawaiian beach. Maddie beamed as the maid of honor for her sister. And there were plenty of those great drinks in the coconut cups with the little umbrellas. The problems of Green Hills were hundreds of miles away.

Sure, there had been a few weird vibes over the weekend. Despite traveling by magic ring portal, Tom was feeling a little jet-lagged. Maddie’s sister still hated him. And to top it off, there was something odd about the groomsmen. Four buff dudes in matching tuxedos and black wraparound shades kept staring him down like they shared one brain.

Whatever. Tom wasn’t going to let it bother him. He’d done his one and only job for the wedding. He’d held the wedding rings for the morning and then tied them onto the little pillow Maddie’s niece carried as she walked up the aisle. Easy peasy. Now all he had to do for the rest of the weekend was get another little coconut cup and watch the sun set into the ocean.

“And now, if we may have the rings?” asked the priest.

The ring bearer lifted the pillow up toward the bride and groom. The dearly beloved assembled in paradise held their breaths. It was perfect.

Twee-diddle-twee-diddle! Twee-diddle-twee-diddle!

Tom’s phone rang, shattering the perfect moment. The bride shot him daggers.

“My bad!” Tom whispered at everyone. “I thought it was on silent!”

Hadn’t it been? Tom suddenly realized that only the emergency calls he’d set up for Sonic would ring that loudly no matter what, and he dove behind a nearby bush to answer. Crouching low, Tom swiped the screen live to a video call.

“This better be an emergency, Sonic! I just . . . Are you skiing?!” Tom saw snow whip across Sonic’s face as mountains flew by behind him. And was he holding an animal?

“Please, I need your help!” his hedgehog ward shouted. “Life or death stuff right now, Tom!”

“What is going on?!”

“I need you to use that ring I gave you to save me—right now!”

“I don’t even know where you are, Sonic!” Tom whisper-shouted, and prayed that the wedding party couldn’t hear him through the foliage.

“You just gotta picture where you want the ring to go,” Sonic said before waving his phone around, revealing a massive avalanche pouring toward them. “Picture this!!”

“Hold on!” Tom reached into his pocket and ran toward the beach. He tossed the single gold ring he had on his body into the air and thought of the horrifying scene on the phone . . .

And nothing happened.

“Did you throw it?” Sonic’s voice yelled urgently from the phone.

Tom reached down and picked up the very ordinary wedding ring off the ground. “Oh man!” he said. “The warp ring must have gotten mixed up with the wedding rings while I was holding them!”

“Then where is it now, Tom?!”

Tom realized the ring was in the worst possible place ever. It was about to be put onto Rachel’s finger.

“Hold tight! I got this!” he yelled to Sonic, and then slowly reentered the wedding, walking up the aisle.
